Dr Paul Reilly from the Information School will be presenting two papers at the IAMRC conference , Leicester, 27-31 July 2016. Professionals at different stages of their career will talk about what information literacy means to them, how they engage with it in their job, and how they see information literacy featuring in their future. Earlier this month PhD student Wasim Ahmed attended the CIFI security summit endorsed by the Metropolitan Police and with speakers from the National Crime Agency (NCA), and participants including Barclays, HM Revenue and Customs, Royal Bank of Scotland, Counter Terrorism Command, US Air Force, and Unilever. Wasim pictured here with the Echosec stand was able to provide an insight to delegates across security teams on the potential of location based social media, and of the potential of social media for security purposes more generally. 

In association with the Chemical Structure Association Trust and the Molecular Graphics and Modelling Society, the School hosted the Seventh Joint Sheffield Conference on Chemoinformatics from the 4 to the 6 July 2016.   This triennial conference is now firmly established in the chemoinformatics calendar, and attracted 116 delegates from around the world.   The ten sessions included 37 poster and 28 oral presentations, with the conference dinner being held in the splendid surroundings of Sheffield Cathedral.

A workshop on Supporting Discovery of Archival Collections: Challenges and Opportunities has been organised by Professor Paul Clough   of the Information School, along with Chris Hilton (Wellcome Trust) and Sarah Higgins and Pauline Rafferty (Aberystwyth University). This one-day meeting is being held 10am-4pm 8 th July 2016, Wellcome Trust, London and includes attendees from BBC Archives, The British Library, Bletchley Park and Houses of Parliament. The one day meeting is for representatives from library and archives communities will discuss the issues surrounding the provision of effective access to digital archives and/or online archives catalogues. It will provide an opportunity to share and discuss discovery challenges and new ways of designing the archives search experience, such as: identifying user groups, their information needs and tasks; the provision of information access to digital collections beyond the search box; helping users make sense of results (especially h

Sheila Webber chaired the opening session of the 2nd European Media and Information Literacy Forum , sponsored by UNESCO in Riga last week, and she also presented at the first plenary session. The opening session included a welcome from the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, Ināra Mūrniece. A key message of Sheila's own presentation (embedded below) was picked up in the title of a news report: Media and Information Literacy is a tool that enables life . Sheila, who is interim co-chair of the European Chapter of the Global Alliance for Partnerships in Media and information Literacy , was also part of the drafting committee for the Riga Recommendations on Media and Information Literacy in a Shifting Media and Information Landscape , which were published at the end of the conference.
